Alternate Title: The 4 Hour Work Week The Ultimate AHA Moment
Our favorite chat show host and all round wonder woman Oprah describes it as an aha moment. I have had a couple of them in my life, I won’t bore you by describing the ones from the past but I will tell you about my most recent. First of all let me explain something. I used to run my own property business in the Uk, not exactly Mr Trump but I had a nice car, house, vacations the usual must haves, but there was still something missing. I was becoming very tired of the rat race so packed up and moved to Spain in search of what was missing in my life. Three years later after some fun and interesting adventures as a barman, yacht skipper, dj (short lived!) and a little bit of property flipping it was time to move yet again. Yeah ok so my middle name is “itchy feet”. The next destination was Las Vegas and after a fleeting dalliance with becoming a professional poker player I decided something was still missing.
I knew I wanted to travel and not just 2 or 3 vacations a year, I mean really travel, you know not actually live anywhere but just keep moving. Well I decided I still needed to make money to fuel this itchy feet obsession and so got into internet marketing. I bought into all the usual scams before finally finding my feet. (A quote from the book: “An expert is a person who has made all the mistakes that can be made in a narrow field” Niels Bohr. He was a Nobel Prize winning Physicist but i think he might have been an internet marketer on the side!) I have never heard IM summed up so succinctly, you have to fail to succeed. Anyway having found my feet and starting to get close to the monthly target I had decided on I began to realize I was still working to much to fulfill my world travel dream. Not much point in being in Buenos Aires if I spent most of the day in my room slaving over my laptop. I hate the whole “find yourself” thing but I knew I was looking for something, my Utopia or Nirvana whatever you want to call it. And then it happened my “AHA Moment”. It was not something I managed to work out for myself, or something a shrink told me or a close friend for that matter. No it was a ………………
BOOK not an ebook either, an actual book with paper and everything. How radical is that!
I saw an ad or link or something on the internet I can’t remember where but whoever made it thank you. It was about the “The 4-Hour Workweek: Escape 9-5, Live Anywhere, and Join the New Rich“. Now I almost went straight passed it, going back to my early IM days it just sounded like another get rich quick scam. Anyway for whatever reason (I guess I must have done something good in a previous life) I took a look and after reading the description I thought what the hell its only $10 and it was a bestseller. A couple of days later it arrived and i put it on my bedside table. Anyway a couple of days went by before I started to read it (ironically enough I was doing overtime on my PC and was too tired to read!). I opened the book and no word of a lie i finished it in one reading. Now I’m not saying it is short on content or anything, far from it, I literally could not put it down. First it described exactly what and who I am and what I had been looking for since my real estate days. Secondly and possibly more importantly it told me how to do it!
Now this is not a step by step guide to easy money, it is more a way of thinking, of being. Don’t get me wrong he does describe in detail how to reduce your hours and maintain your productivity. The way he described what he wanted from life and how he went about getting it is exactly what I had in mind all along. Making enough to do what you want to do. Interestingly enough this process actually makes it easier to do less and make more, the more you do it. Ok so that sound a bit double dutch I guess you’ll just have to read the book to see what I mean. If you are the type of person who wants all the usual monetary trappings like nice house, nice car etc and more importantly be able to tell everybody how much money you have and that your retirement is all planned for then this book is probably not for you.
If however you are like me and the most important thing in life is earning just enough money to do what you want and when you want not in 20 years time when you retire. If you want more free time to be able to spend time climbing mountains, sailing the seas, exploring the Amazon jungle, chilling on a luxury yacht, bungee jumping in Australia, following the Yankees all over the country, doing aid work in Africa or heck how about spending more quality time with your family and kids then this book is a MUST READ! Those that know me will know which of the options are my favorites!
I’m not going to give you a screenshot full of my earnings since I got this book as they hav
